How to play Blankly
Keep your word.
Find one word that fits both blanks. Then we will test it with another sentence — and another. The answer is the word that survives all 4.
He slammed the blank shut and drove off.
She found the letters at the bottom of the blank .
Two sentences, one blank each. Find a word that fits both.
1. Start with 2 sentences
Both are on screen from the beginning, and that is deliberate. One sentence on its own would take almost any word; two together leave a handful of real candidates, so your opening move is a deduction rather than a shot in the dark.
2. Anything that fits gets in
A word that works in every line showing is accepted, fills every blank, and brings the next sentence out. There is no partial credit and no getting warmer — you are either in or you are not.
3. Then it gets tested
The new sentence arrives with your word already standing in it. Sometimes it holds. Sometimes it comes apart, and you go again with one more thing known. Neither outcome is a punishment; that back-and-forth is the game.
That is the whole game
The rest answers itself as you play. Open one if you get curious.
So my answer was wrong?
No — and this is the part worth getting used to. A word that fits every line on screen is right, and it stays right until a sentence arrives that it cannot live in. When that happens the game changed the question, so you get to replace it for free.
Then what does count against me?
Submitting a word that fails a line already in front of you. You had everything you needed, so that one is a miss. You get 5 of them.
How is it scored?
By how early you found it — how many lines were showing when your winning word first appeared. Two is exceptional. Three means you saw it coming. 4 is a full, ordinary solve and not a failure. Misses come second, and revisions do not count at all.
What is First Word Standing?
The first word you submit turns out to be the answer, and it survives all 4 lines. It is rare, it is mostly luck and instinct in some ratio nobody can settle, and it is the best thing that can happen to you here.
Does a different form of the word count?
Not here. The same spelling has to fit every sentence unchanged — no run becoming runs, no file becoming filing. The word not changing is the whole trick.
Can I get a hint?
One kind. After two misses on the same line-up you can ask us to clarify one line, and we will tell you what sort of thing that blank is — never a letter, never a length. It is the only hint that does not turn this into a different game.
My word fits. Why was it turned down?
Quite possibly because we did not think of it. English has more good answers than any editor enumerates, and when we miss one that is our error rather than yours. Every turned-down word has a small should fit button next to it. They all get read, and the good ones get added.
